Pontifical Basilica Cathedral of Brindisi - St. John the Baptist CathedralPontifical Basilica Cathedral Visitation and St. John the Baptist
The Pontifical Basilica Cathedral of Brindisi, also known as the Brindisi Cathedral or the Basilica of the Visitation and St. John the Baptist, was consecrated by Pope Urban II in 1089 and completed in 1143. It holds the dignity of a minor basilica. The cathedral suffered extensive damage in the earthquake of 1743 and underwent reconstruction; subsequently, it has undergone several restoration projects.
The original Romanesque layout has been preserved, featuring a basilica plan similar to that of the Basilica of San Nicola in Bari: three aisles without a transept. The current position of the church's façade corresponds to its original layout, vertically divided into sections corresponding to the various aisles.
In the 1920s, the façade was completed with a tympanum, which was later replaced in 1957 by statues of St. Theodore, St. Lawrence, St. Leucius of Alexandria, and Pope Pius X. These, in turn, were replaced in the latest restoration in 2007 with new statues carved from light-colored local stone, each standing at a height of 2.90 meters. The statues represent St. Leucius, St. Theodore of Amasea, St. Lawrence of Brindisi, and St. Justin de Jacobis.
