Cathedral of the Assumption of Mary - Bitonto CathedralCathedral of the Assumption of Mary, Bitonto: A Treasure of History and Art
The Cathedral of the Assumption of Mary, commonly known as the Bitonto Cathedral, stands as a precious testimony to history and art in the heart of Bitonto's historic center. Since 1986, it has held the status of a co-cathedral, dedicated to Saint Valentine, whose relics are enshrined at the altar.
The construction of the cathedral began between the 11th and 12th centuries, with the overall structure completed by the end of the 12th century. During the mid-13th century, decorative details were added both inside and outside, including the ambo, the main portal, and the majestic rose window in the apse.
Built-in the Puglian Romanesque style, inspired by the Basilica of Saint Nicholas in Bari, the Bitonto Cathedral is considered the most complete expression of Puglian Romanesque art. The finely carved portal and the rose window, the first in Puglia with an arch surmounted by a sphinx and flanked by two lions on hanging columns, contribute to its artistic elegance.
The Bitonto Cathedral is not just a place of worship but a marvel that tells the story of architecture and art. With its beautifully adorned portal, unique rose window, and details like the mosaic in the crypt, it attracts visitors and enthusiasts of history and art from around the world. Its designation as a co-cathedral makes it a religious and cultural landmark in the region.
