The acronym PS1 means "Public School One" and derives from the previous destination of the building in which the center is housed, which was once a school.
PS1 was founded in 1971 under the name of Art and Urban Resources Inc, in order to organize contemporary art exhibitions inside abandoned urban spaces.
Since the beginning, the PS1 has been an institution oriented towards the most innovative forms of contemporary art, through the promotion of emerging artists and the contamination between different expressive forms, including music, performance-art and video art.
The center is unanimously considered one of the most important in the world of its kind.
In 1997, the PS1 building was completely renovated and in 2001 the center was affiliated with the Museum of Modern Art and renamed MoMA PS1.
The MoMA PS1 does not have a permanent collection; in fact, its activity takes place through the organization of temporary exhibitions, performances, concerts, special events, readings, workshops and educational programs. In collaboration with MoMA, PS1 organizes the YAP - Young Architects Program, an initiative aimed at giving young architects the opportunity to design and build a temporary summer pavilion in the outdoor spaces of the PS1.
In the center, a shop and restaurant “M. Wells Dinette ".
The MoMA PS1 is wheelchair accessible.
