SIAE - Theater Collection Museum - exBurcardo Theater Museum Library

SIAE Theater Museum Library in Rome is one of the most important institutions dedicated to the history of theater and entertainment in Italy and around the world.

Founded in 1932, the library preserves a vast heritage of book, archival and museum materials, the result of donations and acquisitions over the years.

The collections:

• Books: around 50,000 volumes, from sixteenth-century editions to contemporary publications, with plays, critical essays, reference works and repertoires.
• Periodicals: approximately 400 newspapers, both closed and current, Italian and foreign.
• Newspaper articles: over half a million reviews taken from Italian newspapers.
• Scripts, manuscripts and autograph correspondence: a collection of great historical and documentary value.
• SIAE Historical Archive: documents linked to the most famous names of Italian culture of the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
  Non-book materials:
  • Photographs: photographic portraits and stage photos, which document theatrical life from the second half of the nineteenth century to the present day.
  • Playbills, posters and theater programmes: ephemeral testimonies of the history of the theatre.
  • Sculptures, paintings, drawings, prints: works of art depicting theatrical characters, scenes and costumes.
  • Costumes, accessories and props: original finds that tell the story of the evolution of costume and theatrical scenography.
  • Marionettes: a collection of historical puppets, an expression of the Italian theatrical tradition.
