The Passionist Fathers Novitiate is a cozy place but full of faith and poignant beauty. It was an oasis, a stronghold in the eighteenth century that allowed the order to defend itself from raids, malaria, plague.
It is located near the complex that constitutes the mother house of the Congregation of the Passionist Fathers and consists of a conventual part and the church. Construction work began in 1733 and was completed in 1737.
Much venerated is the image called "Madonna di Monte Argentario" of the Roman school of the '700. On the altar of the right transept there is a canvas with an image of the Magdalene from the 18th century and, on the left altar, a San Michele, a copy of the homonymous subject by Guido Reni of the Church of the Capuchins in Rome.
In the crypt there are both the statue of the founder of the order (in travertine) and a bas-relief, also in travertine, representing the landing place at the Argentario of San Paolo della Croce. Finally, inside the church you can admire a bronze urn with the remains of the young Passionist the venerable Galileo Nicolini by the sculptor Tito Amodei.
On 12 December 2000, surprisingly and without warning to the amazement and emotion of the religious present, Pope John Paul II stopped to pray in the church of the convent.
The place was also particularly loved by Susanna Agnelli (mayor of Monte Argentario from 1974 to 1984), so much so that she expressed a desire for her and wanted her funeral to be celebrated there.
«I used to walk in the evening, after finishing the work in the Commune, before returning to my lonely house. I knew that up there, in the woods, I had someone who was my friend ... Now, when I return to the Argentario I no longer go towards the port, but I go back to the Monte, to the church. I feel I am closer to friends as well as closer to God "
