The Ecomuseum is a participatory practice of enhancing the tangible and intangible cultural heritage, elaborated and developed by an organized entity, expression of a local community, in the perspective of sustainable development (Charter of Catania - 2007)
Eco-museums are configured as participatory processes of recognition, care and management of the local cultural heritage in order to promote sustainable social, environmental and economic development.
Eco-museums are design identities that aim to relate uses, techniques, crops, productions, resources of a homogeneous territorial area with the cultural heritage contained therein.
Eco-museums are cultural growth paths of local communities, creative and inclusive, based on the active participation of the inhabitants and the collaboration of bodies and associations.
The Ecomuseum of Cascina Moglioni, established in 1996, was among the first born in Italy, together with the Ecomuseum of Rye - Protected Areas of the Maritime Alps, the Colombano Romean Ecomuseum - Cozie Alps Protected Areas, the Basso Monferrato Astigiano Ecomuseum - Basso Monferrato Astigiano Association. Managed, as already mentioned, by the Piedmontese Apennine Protected Area Authority (formerly the Capanne di Marcarolo Natural Park Authority), it is based in an ancient farmhouse in the Capanne di Marcaro area, near the historic site of Benedicta, a location known for its a terrible roundup, which took place in the spring of 1944, in which more than one hundred young anti-fascists lost their lives.
The Capanne di Marcarolo area, established as a Regional Natural Park in 1979, had already been thoroughly investigated at the beginning of the 1980s precisely for its not only naturalistic but also historical-anthropic peculiarities, due to the long geographical isolation from urban centers neighboring.
