Lagopesole CastleThe Lagopesole Castle is a medieval castle from the Frederick era located on a small hill at an altitude of 820 m above sea level located on the watershed between the Ofanto and Bradano rivers, in Basilicata which today also hosts film and television series shooting.
The castle is located in the village of Lagopesole which, opening like a fan on the south-facing side of the aforementioned hill, is part of the municipality of Avigliano, in the province of Potenza. Since December 2014 the site has been managed by the Basilicata museum complex.
The castle was the ideal home for Manfredi, son of Frederick II, who privileged Lagopesole to the capital of his kingdom, Palermo.
The present state of the castle, restored in the nineties, reflects the changes made to the Norman-Swabian project by Charles I of Anjou, who used the castle above all as a luxury prison (Elena Angelo Comneno di Epiro, wife of Manfredi, and his sons).
In the nineteenth century the castle was a refuge for brigands led by Carmine Crocco, who occupied it with 400 men on 7 April 1861.
The castle, now state property and seat of the State Forestry Corps, hosts numerous cultural activities and since 2000 has hosted the Antiquarium built with medieval materials found during the excavation campaigns carried out in the minor courtyard.
