Marostica is an Italian town in the province of Vicenza in Veneto. It is known all over the world for the chess game that takes place with living characters in the town square, every two years (even years) on the second weekend of September: it is a tradition started in 1923 and which is inspired by an event of the 1454, although there is no historical evidence.
For this historic event, the town of Vicenza is also nicknamed "the city of chess". It boasts the tourist-environmental quality mark of the Orange Flag awarded by the Italian Touring Club. Marostica is also famous for the production of the Marostica Cherry, a product with a protected geographical indication.
