The University of Cagliari (UNIca) is an Italian state university founded in 1607 and officially entered into operation in 1626. In 2016 it has 31,102 students enrolled. For some time the Sardinian parliament has been asking for the establishment of a university in the capital, to increase the rate of education and avoiding the inconveniences of expensive trips to the universities of the continent, especially those of Pisa, Bologna and Salamanca.
It was in the early 1600s that the action of the stamenti, led by the archbishop of Cagliari Monsignor Francisco d'Esquivel, obtained the constitution of the university in Cagliari: in 1607 Pope Paul V issued the institutional bull, while in 1620 the privilege of foundation was obtained by Philip III of Spain.
