Sardinian Railway Museum of Cagliari

The Sardinian Railway Museum of Cagliari collects documents and objects, testifying the development of the Sardinian railway network starting from 1884.

Among the most important pieces, the lounge of the royal carriage, destroyed by the bombings of 1943 and the steam locomotive D744.003.

The Sardinian Railway Museum was set up in 1985, following the testimonies of interest expressed by the numerous visitors of the retrospective exhibition set up by the State Railways, in the Citadel of the Museums of Cagliari in 1984, to celebrate 100 years of railways in Sardinia.

The aim was to establish a dutiful testimony of industrial archeology of the Royal Sardinian Railways and of the "Concesse" to ensure over time the preservation of what survived the incredible havoc that in the past led to the scrapping of old locomotives and other precious finds.

In fact, the museum collects more than 100 testimonies that survived the inexorable process of substitution of the times that retrace all the most important stages in the Sardinian history of railways.

The museum is located inside the Cagliari station, immediately accessible from the car entrance in via Sassari 24.

The steam locomotive D 744.003, the only survivor of the series, used for a long time on the Cagliari-Olbia connections, is also exhibited in the atrium of the Cagliari station.

The museum is open on request, with guided tours for schools and small groups
