Legnano
Legnano is an Italian city in the metropolitan city of Milan in Lombardy, about 20 kilometers north-west of the Lombard capital. Located in the Upper Milanese area and crossed by the Olona River, it is the fourth most populous city in the metropolitan city of Milan and the thirteenth in Lombardy.
The origins of the town can be traced back to the first millennium BC, a period to which the oldest finds found in the territory of the municipality. In fact, already in ancient times, the hills bordering the Olona proved to be habitable places.
Thanks to a historic battle, Legnano is the only city, besides Rome, to be mentioned in the Italian national anthem ("[...] From the Alps to Sicily wherever Legnano is [...]"). Every year the people of Legnano remember this battle with the Palio delle contrade, which normally takes place on the last Sunday of May. In the institutional context, May 29, the date of the battle of Legnano, was chosen as the regional festival of Lombardy.
