Villa Medici - Virtual Tour 360°The French Academy in Rome is a French artistic institution located in the Villa Medicea del Pincio in Rome, which welcomes artists and researchers to carry out research projects.
The Accademia di Francia in Rome also offers a rich cultural program, organizing exhibitions, concerts, screenings, literary conferences and conventions, often in collaboration with fellows or former fellows.
It is also responsible for the protection and promotion of the Medici Villa and its gardens, which are open daily to the public through guided tours. The French Academy in Rome was founded by Colbert in 1666 to welcome the winners of the Rome Grand Prix and the artists protected by the great French aristocracy.
Mussolini confiscated the villa in 1941 after the first interruption of competitions during the First World War. The Collège de France then moved to Nice until 1941, first to Nice and then to Fontainebleau.
In 1968 André Malraux suppressed the Competition and the Rome Grand Prix (which he had tried to suppress in 1962); the last Architecture Grand Prize was awarded in 1967, as the events of 1968 prevented the How it happened, the Academy of Fine Arts in Paris and the Academy of France therefore lost the protection of the Medici Villas, in favor of the Ministry of Culture and the state.
Since then, retirees have come not only from traditional disciplines (painting, sculpture, architecture, carving of medals or gems, musical composition) but also from hitherto neglected or simply new fields of art: literature, scenography, photography, cinema, historical art, restoration).
