Victorian Altar of the Fatherland

The Altare della Patria in Rome was built following a decision by the Italian Parliament, to dedicate a national monument, to the just deceased sovereign Vittorio Emanuele II (1878), its original name is "National Monument to Vittorio Emanuele II" and located in Piazza Venezia in Rome, but is better known by the name of Vittoriano or Altare della Patria, in Latin Ara Patriæ, it is a national monument located in Rome, on the Campidoglio, the work of the architect Giuseppe Sacconi.

After having announced two international competitions (1880 and 1882), the project presented by Giuseppe Sacconi was chosen. The young architect from the Marche, on the model of the great sanctuaries of the classical age, had conceived the space as a scenic representation that celebrated the Italian Risorgimento in the center of imperial Rome.

The architectural structure of the monument was developed as an ideal ascending path which, through the stairways and terraces, enriched by the various sculptural groups and bas-reliefs of the central Altare della Patria, rose to the lateral temples and from these to the grandiose colonnaded portico surmounted by bronze quadrigas. , allegories of the Unity of the Fatherland and of Liberty.

The monument is owned by the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and has been managed, since December 2014, by the Polo Museale del Lazio.
