Novecento Museum - Leopoldine Hospital

The Novecento Museum is located in Florence, inside the ancient Leopoldine Hospital in Piazza Santa Maria Novella.

It is dedicated to Italian art of the twentieth century and offers a selection of about 300 works distributed in 15 rooms. It was inaugurated on June 24, 2014.

Part of the exhibited works arrived in Florence following the international appeal that the critic Carlo Ludovico Ragghianti made to the world of art and culture after the flood of 1966. On November 15, 1966 he addressed directly to artists and collectors, not only Italians, and invited them to donate a work to the city, in order to compensate with "new" art the huge losses of the Florentine artistic heritage caused by the fury of the water.

Over 280 artists responded to the invitation: some Florentines, such as Sergio Scatizzi, other lively visitors to the city, such as Lucio Fontana and Emilio Vedova. The fulcrum of the visits of these artists were important galleries such as Numero di Fiamma Vigo, Quadrante by Matilde Giorgini, the Vigna Nuova Gallery of the brothers Danilo, Sergio and Valeria Santi and La Strozzina directed by Ragghianti himself from 1946 to 1966.

The donated works, which arrived by January 1967, were exhibited in Palazzo Vecchio in February in the exhibition entitled The Artists for Florence and merged into the civic collection of the twentieth century which already boasted some paintings by Ottone Rosai donated to the municipality in 1963 by the heirs (Fra of them the series of oval portraits of the Florentine intelligentsia of the time).

Further gifts soon arrived: 30 paintings by Emilio Greco and in 1968 the entire studio of Marino Marini, rich in sculptures, paintings and drawings.

Many other works formally donated by the authors remained uncollected, in the absence of a place to place them.
