Benedictine Monastery of the Abbey of San Pietro di SorresThe monastery has annexed the former Cathedral of San Pietro di Sorres which is a Romanesque church, a national monument since 1894.
The Abbey is located on a hill of volcanic origin in the municipality of Borutta, a small town in Meilogu, in the province of Sassari in Sardinia.
The monastic complex is located on the Sorres hill at 570 meters, in the Logudoro region.
The reconstruction work on the current monastery is quite recent, as it dates back to 1950.
And after the first monks arrived here in 1967 it was only in 1974 that the monastery was elevated to an abbey. It is to be considered an epochal moment, given that the Benedictines re-established themselves in Sardinia after an absence of almost five centuries.
The abbey is open to those who wish to share a few days of personal and liturgical prayer in silence and nature with the monks.
30 beds are available. Occasionally vocal concerts are organized especially for traditional Sardinian polyphonic choirs.
In the monastery there is also an important book restoration laboratory which is worth seeing and which also offers courses in writing and iconography.
Built between the 12th and 13th centuries, it was the cathedral of the no longer existing diocese of Sorres until 1503. Since 1950 the church and the adjacent monastery have hosted a community of Benedictine monks.
