The Sanctuary of Gibilmanna, dedicated to the Holy Virgin, is a famous place of worship in the metropolitan city of Palermo, located in Gibilmanna, a hamlet of Cefalù and belonging to the diocese of the same name in the religious province of Palermo.
It is located about 800 m a.s.l. on the western slopes of Pizzo Sant'Angelo (top of the Madonie), on the top of which there was a small church dedicated to San Michele Arcangelo.
The monastic complex, located on the western side of Pizzo Sant'Angelo (850 m.), Immersed in a forest of oaks and chestnuts, was built according to tradition by the will of St. Gregory the Great, before he became pope in 540. Until his arrival of the Capuchin Franciscan friars in the sixteenth century, the church was guarded by various hermits.
The sanctuary and the convent are the center of an intense spiritual and cultural life, in fact there is no shortage of classical and contemporary music concerts, conferences and art exhibitions. The structures of the Casa di Accoglienza Santa Chiara are able to accommodate families and groups of lay and religious organized for spiritual retreats and periods of study.
According to tradition, that of Gibilmanna was one of the six Benedictine monasteries that St. Gregory the Great (540-604; pontiff from 590) had built at his own expense, before being elected pontiff. The feast of the jubilee of San Gregorio in fact included a pilgrimage to the sanctuary and then to the ruins of a destroyed church which was believed to be the original oratory built by the saint in the sixth century.
The convent buildings had to go to ruin in the 9th century, coinciding with the arrival of the Arabs (858), while the small church was probably in the custody of several hermits. With the conquest of the Normans, a vast work of reconstruction of monasteries and sacred buildings was started. In a document of 1178 the church is again mentioned. In 1228 the church had become a "priory" and therefore no longer belonged to the Benedictine monks. In 1279 the benefit of "Santa Maria de Jubileo Magno" passed to an Augustinian friar.
In the first half of the 16th century, the priest Antonio Lo Duca, promoter of the construction of the church of Santa Maria degli Angeli in Rome, became prior.
