The Monastery of San Benedetto, or Sanctuary of the Sacro Speco, is an ancient Benedictine monastery located in the territory of Subiaco, in the metropolitan city of Roma Capitale, in Lazio.
The monastery stands in the curvature of an immense rock wall of Mount Taleo and is supported by nine high arches, partly ogival.
The interior, a complicated labyrinth of rooms, churches, chapels, sometimes carved out of the rock, is covered with a precious fresco decoration from various eras, from the first Byzantine works (8th century) to the precious portrait of St. Francis (1223), formerly faithful depiction of the Saint made even before he had risen to the glory of the altars, to the paintings by Magister Consolus (XIII century), to the remarkable frescoes of the Sienese and Umbrian-Marche schools that decorate the upper church and other rooms (XIV and XV centuries).
The fresco depicting Francis of Assisi, considered to be the first as well as his most faithful representation, [without source] was made 3 years before his death probably during his stay in 1223-1224 and shows a Francis without stigmata and halo.
Also noteworthy is the statue of San Benedetto, the work of Antonio Raggi (1657).
