The Historical Museum of Military Motorization was founded in 1955 on the initiative of the Chief of the automotive body then in charge. The museum turns out to be the only Italian exhibition of 20th century military vehicles.
It was originally located in limited spaces to be moved to its current location in 1991.
Previously inserted in extremely limited exhibition spaces, in 1991 it was moved to its current location, after the recovery of the pre-existing infrastructures, in an area of ??about 50 thousand square meters, very articulated, with wide avenues, extensive green areas and volumes with structure a "card", typical of the early century, once used for educational activities of the Military Motorization School.
Overall, there are more than three hundred units including vintage civilian and military cars and trucks, sixty between tracked, armored and armored vehicles, and sixty vintage motorcycles. Among the six exhibition pavilions, the one entitled to the "Arturo Mercanti Gold Medal" in which the Management is located, a library-archive with data and technical sheets referring to many motor vehicles entrusted to the Army, from its origins to nowadays, as well as photographic and documentary material, a large wall map showing the dynamic maneuver carried out by General Cadorna in Trentino, in the year 1916, characterized by the first massive use of car transport.
In addition to some animal towed wagons from 1914 and 1916, the Museum includes pieces of great value and historical importance, such as the Fiat 18 BL, Fiat 15 Ter and Spa 38 trucks, as well as two Piper L 18 and L 21 B light aircraft, a Fiat 501 Torpedo, an L3 fast wagon, an M 15-42 wagon and a P 40 wagon, a very rare Lancia Astura Lince armored car from 1942, a Spa Dovunque 35 truck, a Fiat 513 model 4 from 1910, used by Vittorio Emanuele III for travel on the front of the 1st World War, and the very famous ambulance of the film "Addio alle Armi", Fiat Tipo 2 from 1910.
The town of Cecchignola is located on the southern outskirts of Rome, a short distance from the Eur district where the Museum of Roman Civilization, the Palazzo della Civiltà del Lavoro and the church of Saints Peter and Paul can be visited.
It can be visited, by reservation, on Saturdays from 09:00 to 12:00.
