MACRO is considered a reference point for contemporary public art in Rome to which operators in the sector, but also the general public, turn to for their exhibition proposals. MACRO is a center for contemporary art that intends to become more and more multipurpose.
The MACRO in via Nizza is located in the Salario-Nomentano district of Rome and occupies part of the complex that the Peroni Beer Company used for its production activities until 1971. The structure was built by Gustavo Giovannoni and represents a rare example of industrial archeology in the city.
The MACRO, until 2017 was part of the Museums in the Municipality system of the Capitoline Superintendence for Cultural Heritage, since 2018 the management has been entrusted to the Special Company Palaexpo, an instrumental body of Roma Capitale, Department of Cultural Growth.
From October 2018 the Macro is the seat of the experimental project "MACRO Asilo", with the artistic direction of Giorgio de Finis, a new meeting space between artists and the city, which since 2020 has given way to MIP - Museum for the 'Preventive Imagination, the artistic program of the new director Luca Lo Pinto.
The MACRO collection includes about 600 works of art, and consists mainly of works from the second half of the twentieth century by Italian artists but also includes works by artists of the last generations.
