Mogliano Veneto is a town in the province of Treviso in Veneto.
The Moglianese is completely flat and the altitude goes from 2 to 16 m a.s.l .; the municipal house is located at 8 m a.s.l. The soil is mostly clayey, which allowed the waters to remain on the surface, creating a rather significant water network: the main river is the Zero, which passes near the center; to the south, near Morocco flows the Dese; to remember also ditches and drains such as Pianton, Fossa Storta, Zermanson, Peseggiana. The presence of groundwater is also relevant.
The name of the city seems to be of Roman origin: praedium Molianum must have been called the complex of possessions of a certain Molius. It is certain that the area belonged to the Altino countryside and as such was intensely cultivated. A sign of the centuriation is the layout of some of the current roads.
Another hypothesis, certainly more imaginative, traces the toponym to the Venetian mojo, that is "wet", "marshy". After the barbarian invasions and, later, the Hungarians (889 AD), the territory, where there was an early Christian parish, was in fact abandoned to itself.
The first historical document that mentions Mogliano dates back to 997, the year in which Rozone, bishop of Treviso, granted Abbot Vitale the construction of a Benedictine monastery so that the area could be reclaimed and repopulated. In this first existing writing, the place is mentioned with the toponym of "Moliane". The work was also spurred on by donations from the emperors Otto III and Henry III. Furthermore, Pope Victor II later confirmed the concessions already made by the bishop of Treviso.
Mogliano is a center of recent urban development and does not preserve a precious historical center, however it can boast some interesting sites. For this reason, the municipality has been declared a city of art under the L.R. December 28, 1999 n. 62.
