House of the Faun (La Casa del Fauno) is a Roman house, buried during the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 and found following the archaeological excavations of ancient Pompeii: it is one of the largest houses in the city and owes its name to a statue in bronze, depicting a satyr, placed in the impluvium. It almost completely occupies Insula 12 of Regio VI.
A first construction of the house dates back to the third century BC, smaller than the current one and characterized by a large vegetable garden; in the second century BC, around 120 BC, taking advantage of other nearby houses and raising the floor by about one meter, the house was totally rebuilt and enlarged, reaching an extension of 2970 square meters.
