Lake Baikal is a lagoon of southern Siberia, divided between the territories of the Irkutsk oblast and the Republic of Buryatia. It was the place under UNESCO protection as a World Heritage Site in 1996.
It is part of the list of Seven Wonders of Russia. Lake Baikal covers an area of ​​31 722 km², which makes it one of the largest lakes in the world by surface area; it stretches 636 km from north to south (it is the second longest in the world after Lake Tanganyika), with an average width of 48 km (maximum 79.4 km).
