The Institute and Oceanographic Museum of Monaco is a center of conservation and studies of the sea, founded in 1889, instead the Oceanographic Institution was founded in 1906. Both were created by Prince Albert I of Monaco Treaty of the French Ministry of Education.
The building stands on the base of the Rock of Monaco on the French Riviera. Near the museum is the prison of Monaco which houses 40 prisoners on 80 available cells.
