Devil's Bridge

The Devil's Bridge is one of the two bridges on the island of Torcello, in the Venetian Lagoon and is very characteristic as, together with the Ponte Chiodo in Cannaregio, it has the features of the ancient Venetian bridges, without a parapet. Cross the Maggiore canal, the waterway that connects the small historic center of Torcello to the lagoon.

The origin of the name of the bridge is still unexplained. Some claim that Diavoli was the nickname of a local family, others trace it back to a legend.

Recent archaeological investigations have confirmed that its construction dates back to the fifteenth century, as finds dating back to that period were found in the soil between the brick arch and the walking surface, also in brick.

However, it was found that its foundations were grafted onto pre-existing foundations, datable to the 13th century, belonging to a previous bridge probably flat and narrower than the current one by about one meter.
