The Vienna Museum, actually the museums of the city of Vienna, is a scientific institution of public law with its own legal personality and headquarters in Vienna, under which several museums of the city are grouped to form a museum group.
In addition to the main building on Karlsplatz, which opened as a museum building on 23 April 1959, and the Hermesvilla, a former imperial castle, there are numerous outposts in the form of special museums, apartments for musicians and archaeological sites.
The permanent art collection and the historical collection on the history of Vienna exhibit objects from the Neolithic to the mid-20th century. The focus is on the 19th century, with works by Gustav Klimt, for example. In addition, the Wien Museum organizes various special exhibitions.
The Wien Museum was directed by Wolfgang Kos in 2003-2015.
It was followed by a call for tenders and the decision of the state government of Vienna, at the request of city councilor Andreas Mailath-Pokorny, on 1 October 2015, as director Matti Bunzl.
